Agenda

James Thomason

This keynote is poised to offer groundbreaking insights into AI and child safety.

James Thomason, Managing Partner at Next Wave Partners and former CTO, Dell Cloud Marketplace,  will challenge the common perception of technology as merely a tool. Instead, he will present a deeper exploration of technology's profound influence on our society. The talk will delve into how technology shapes our individual and collective experiences, molds societal structures, and influences cultural values. Furthermore, discussing the psychological and safety risks associated with pseudoanthropomorphic AI, underscoring the importance of responsible AI design in interactions with children.

Today more than ever before there is a much-needed focus on privacy protections for children and teens online. Public awareness of online harms and evidence of the exploitation of children’s data has led to an unprecedented number of new and proposed regulations at US federal and state level, in Europe and globally. What does this mean in practice for companies and privacy professionals navigating the complex landscape of regulatory requirements and aligning the different demands while providing children with valuable experiences? What lessons can we learn from past enforcement actions and what should we expect in the coming months? This session brings together leading privacy professionals to discuss and shed light on this increasingly important topic.

The FTC has proposed strengthening the COPPA Rule’s data security requirements by mandating that operators establish, implement, and maintain a written children’s personal information security program that contains safeguards that are appropriate to the sensitivity of the personal information collected from children. Is your company prepared? This lighting round will break down the new proposed requirement.

The protection of children online is a key focus in the age verification debate. With new regulations in the US and internationally requiring age verification and verifiable parental consent, significant developments and controversies have reshaped the responsibilities of businesses and the rights of consumers. Privacy concerns are increasing as age verification methods handle sensitive personal data. This session will discuss major developments in age assurance/verification, examining the intentions behind the laws, the challenges they face, and the controversies they spark, including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and pioneering moves by states like Utah, Ohio, Texas, Louisiana, California, Virginia and Arkansas.

We'll explore compliance intricacies, business hurdles, and ethical considerations in this new digital landscape. We will also highlight technology solutions that prioritize privacy and seamlessly integrate user protection and compliance. This session aims to help you adopt age assurance and consent solutions, turning compliance challenges into opportunities for leadership in digital safety and privacy.

Michael Preston-1Michael Preston, Executive Director of the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Street Workshop, will address the need to foster responsible innovation in technology in order to build a positive digital world for kids.

“Generally, digital technologies aren’t made with kids in mind, but they are often early adopters who find creative ways to use new tech. At the Cooney Center, we regularly ask ourselves, ‘How can we collaborate better with the innovation community to involve kids at the beginning of the process?’” says Preston.

He will discuss how the Joan Ganz Cooney Center has joined forces with the LEGO Group and UNICEF in the Responsible Innovation and Technology for Children (RITEC) project to explore how businesses and policymakers can create a world that prioritizes children’s well-being.

Featuring:

  • Sarah Jacobstein, Project Manager, Responsible Innovation in Technology for Children (RITEC) at the Joan Ganz Cooney Center

  • Dr. Elizabeth Milovidov, Sr. Corporate Counsel (digital games, metaverse and child safety), the LEGO Group

  • Michael Preston, PhD, Executive Director, Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop

Building a product for teens means creating a perfect recipe (and making sure they like it!).  Grab the best minds in product engineering, content design and marketing.  Add in the right legal and regulatory stakeholders, privacy professionals and outside counsel, and be up to date on state and federal rules.  Voila!  Here is a first-hand look at the process, the bumps in the road, and finally, the launch!

Featuring:

  • Andra Dallas, Head of Legal Marketing, NA & Senior Counsel, PayPal

This session will look at how to provide children and teens with privacy protected experiences and at the same time meet business needs. Free to use experiences are key if children are to have equal opportunities online but organizations and companies must fund the services they build. The challenges of monetization are many in the children’s space. Many platforms and services have failed to get the balance right between providing valuable services and protecting personal data. This session looks at the pitfalls, the possibilities and use cases that show two very different approaches to succeeding.
